The Legend of the Flugelhorn 1970’s never made it to Catalina Island, but now his SONGS finally will. A Tribute that is being created by Chuck’s original 1970’s guitarist GRANT GEISSMAN who later become famous as the Music Director for the Red Hot CBS Television Series ‘Two and a Half Men’ first starring Charlie Sheen and then Ashton Kushner.

Grant WAS the Guitar Solo on Chuck HUGE 1977 CrossOver Pop Hit “Feels So Good.” Take a Listen to what was the ALBUM 10 minute LONG Version. The single when edited down to the normal 3 1/2 minutes went to Number #4 on the Billboard Top 100 Pop Chart.

Next year, 1978, the same titled album went to #2 on the Billboard (all) Albums Chart. Only blocked from the top by the Soundtrack to ‘Saturday Night Fever.’

Chuck MANGIONE Producer Notes by Art Good

Man it kills me I was never able to book Mr. Mangione on Catalina Island. I’d been trying the last few years but I waited too long. He stopped playing around 2015 in his mid 70’s.

Chuck Mangione

I was Brand New to Radio, I mean Working in Radio when Chuck hit the scene. Actually he debuted while I was still in college in 1973 but I didn’t become familiar until he crossed the charts with his famous instrumental FEELS SO GOOD.

The song peaked at #4 on the Billboard Pop charts in 1977. The album reached No. 2 on the Billboard Albums Chart, not jazz, but all albums chart, a year later. Only thing that kept it from No. 1 was the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. I’m thinking what really hit me was his Live from the Hollywood Bowl album in 1978. There might even have been a radio special we aired in those first few years of my radio career.

Chuck Mangione

When I created KIFM’s Lites Out San Diego, March of 1982, knowing absolutely NOTHING about jazz, contemporary or traditional, I went through all the vinyl albums I’d been sent from the record company’s, in hopes of airplay, and initially just pulled out the artists who’d had Cross over to Pop Hits. Like Grover Washington Jr.’s “Just the Two of Us,” and Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good.” Because those were the few instrumental songs I’d been playing on Mellow, Soft Rock Stations I was programming.

Going thru his albums, boy did he hit me. The style, the compositions, the dude wearing a funny hat. I was just looking for something I’d lost, which I’ll never admit what it was, in a hole in my bedroom bed set-up, endangering my life pulling up the KING mattress while I flashlighted down behind it. If I’d fallen in, no one might ever have found me. I did not find what I was looking for but I saw a Cassette. Barely reaching it and barely escaping the huge mattress falling down on me, I could not believe what I was looking at or imagine how it got back there. Do mice listen to my interview tapes?

Chuck Mangione

I honestly do NOT remember doing this 1988 JazzTrax interview, but obviously I was the Humphrey’s every concert host, so I put him on stage that night. But I DO remember a concert I hosted for Chuck in La Jolla. A small performance theater south end of Prospect Street. I’d only had a lot of drinks on Prospect Street, this was the only concert I ever remember there.

I did the kind of not direct intro some artists want… ”Ladies and Gentlemen, In a Moment, Chuck Man Gioneeeeeee” And I walked into the dark curtains on the side and found myself standing next to Chuck. Just him and me. His band was already set, on stage. All I remember these almost 40 years later is he turned to me. He was rather short by the way, and said, “Do you think they’re ready for me Art.” All I could think to reply was … ”Yea, Sure Chuck.”

He then lifted up his flugelhorn, there in the darkness Side Stage, nobody in the audience even knowing he was introducing himself, and said, “Ladies and Gentlemen … would you please welcome Chuck Man Gee Ohnie. And walked on stage. Priceless and as i stood there where seconds before I’d been standing next to Mr. Feels So Good, I confirmed no one could ever tell ME I pronounce his name improperly. Now all I have to do is find a Cassette Player so I can listen to this interview …

Chuck Mangione

So I failed at ever getting Chuck on our JazzTrax Stage. APA his agency towards the end said, “Art, he’s at his place down in Florida (although he passed in his hometown of Rochester, New York) retired. I even contacted his original guitarist Grant Geissman who I’ve kept in touch with through the years and who showed up in Tom Scott’s band a few years back on our Island asking if I booked Grant, could he get Chuck to come as special guest for a few songs.

Just bring himself. No go. Chuck was done. Ironically the last time I ever saw Chuck was at a radio convention, probably in San Francisco in the 90’s. I was standing a few feet from him when someone said, “Do you realize that is Chuck Mangione right there?” He had not his signature HAT on and hair was cut short and maybe no beard. At that moment if I’d been talking to him I would not have had a clue it was CHUCK MANGIONE…

Chuck Mangione

Then came July 22nd, last summer. Chuck passed away peacefully at age 84 in his sleep at his Rochester home. I then reached out to Grant Geissman, Chuck’s original guitarist and the guitar solo on “Feels So Good.” Thought it was a long shot but would Grant be interested in putting together a Chuck Mangione Tribute Show. He didn’t hesitate, “Sure Art.”

Grant himself had a solo career on Mesa/Blue Moon Records late 80’s/early 90’s. Think we brought him over to Catalina Island once or twice. But then he struck gold in the television music world. He was the Music Director for CBS “Two and a Half Men,” that initially starred Charlie Sheen from 2003 to 2011 and then Sheen was replaced by Ashton Kitcher. And co-wrote its theme song with the show’s 2 producers Chuck Lorre and Lee Aronsohn.

TAKE A LISTEN TO IT the song was actually called “Manly Men”

As the show’s Music Director, Chuck composed much of the show’s incidental music. 10 seconds of the song here. 30 seconds maybe at show’s beginning and end. But he did put the entire 5 minute song on his album “Cool Man Cool’ in 2011. Two and a Half Men, in 2012 was the 3rd highest revenue-generating TV program, earning 3.24 million per episode. Charlie Sheen you might say rather F ed up.

Chuck Mangione

One final notation as we announce that the Songs of Mangione will FINALLY come to the JazzTrax Live Performance Stage. Grant Geissman, guitar Benny Benack III, flugelhorn and trumpet With special guest, Gap Mangione, piano The full band will also include Brian Scanlon, woodwinds Kevin Axt, bass Dave Tull, drums with a second keyboard player to be named probably because Chuck’s older brother Gap is 87 years old, but will … Give It All “He’s” Got.

Peter White

Considering the extensive 36 year history between Peter and JazzTrax and Art Good here’s more of “from Art” as Peter returns yet again to what’s gotta be HIS Favorite Island, at least HIS Favorite Smooth Jazz Island.

Producer Notes by Art good

It was Spring of 1990, Basia came into the KIFM studio’s in San Diego to do an On-Air ahead of her concert that night downtown. Danny White her forever Music Director and keyboardist (and former boyfriend) accompanied her. As she made her rounds Danny struck up a conversation with me. Told me his older brother was about to release a debut solo album. His older brother was Peter White. That was my first tip-off. AT THAT MOMENT I’D NEVER HEARD OF PETER WHITE BEFORE. Can you even now imagine that we went through the whole 1980’s without Peter White in the genre? He was simply the guitar sideman for Al Stewart, Mr. Year of the Cat. 1976

In fact for years I later said that Peter had been the Guitar Solo on “Year of the Cat.” Peter finally corrected me that the song’s distinctive guitar solo’s were played by Tim Renwick, both the acoustic and electric guitar parts and the song was actually produced by Alan Parsons. However Peter IS ON THE SONG, just not on guitar, but rather on KEYS !!!!

Peter was originally hired to be Al Stewart’s KEYBOARDIST and that’s what Peter was playing on “Year of the Cat!” YOU MUST WATCH THIS VIDEO of “Year of the Cat” Is THAT Peter White on Keys? Is It? As I first watched the video’s early minutes, looking at the Keyboardist ON THE RIGHT I thought, “Could that possibly be a young Peter White. No, maybe?
Yes, No ………? Actually go to the 2:07 mark. Instead, Peter appears to be the keyboardist ON THE LEFT

However as Peter took over the guitar role he IS the Spanish Guitar Solo on Al Stewart’s “On the Border.” Also played Keys on the song released in 1977. Here he is sitting to Al Stewart’s Right in live performance of the song. His Spanish Guitar takes over at the minute 50 mark. WATCH “On the Border”

Peter did co-compose Al Stewart’s 1978 radio hit, “Time Passages” WATCH Peter performing “Time Passages” with Al Stewart Go to the 2:30 mark to see Peter’s Spanish Guitar Solo

That debut album of Peter White did come out shortly after his brother Danny encouraged me that day in April 1990 in the San Diego radio studio and we named “Reivellezvous’ the JazzTrax 1990 Album of the Year. But we couldn’t get Peter on our October JazzTrax Stage that Fall because …. he was on guitar for Basia on her World Tour.

Then along came 1991 and a 2nd Peter White album and for a 2nd consecutive Year gave him our JazzTrax Album of the Year honor, this time for ‘Excuses-moi.’ And that October 1991 Peter came to Catalina Island at the 5th annual JazzTrax Festival. We were 2 weekends by then. He to this day gives our festival and the Avalon Ballroom for being HIS MAJOR STAGE SOLO DEBUT.

He played BOTH WEEKENDS. I remember like it was yesterday. Think it was Sunday Afternoons. 1st weekend he was okay, probably okay good. 2nd weekend he took it through the roof. I was standing in the back, by the bar with his manager, (manager to this day) Steve Chapman. That 2nd Sunday I turned to Steve and said, “Wow, this is so much better than the same show Last Week. What happened?” Steve replied, “He Went Home …. and Figured It Out.”

Peter gave me I guess a distinct honor once when playing our Thursday Unplugged at the Wrigley Ranch. He said, “Of all the 10 most unusual places I’ve ever played, ALL of THEM have been JazzTrax. From this ranch on the far side of Catalina Island that we had to get to on that treacherous road across past the Airport in the Sky. To Top of the Mountain in Big Bear Lake. To Top of a winter ski slope in Steamboat Springs. To on the shoreline of Lake Tahoe.

To LITERALLY ON a TRAIN, performing, ON A TRAIN, headed to Vail, Colorado. To a Cruise Ship headed to Ensenada alongside the pool, long before the S.S. Dave Koz’s.

I’ll grab some credit for inspiring Peter’s mid 90’s Christmas Album. To this day not sure why instead of ‘Songs of the Season,’ he didn’t call it “A Peter WHITE Christmas,” but that came after a couple Decembers on the JazzTrax 1990’s Christmas Tours across America.

Once somewhere along I-5 in Oregon saying, “We’ve got to stop at a Subway Sandwich Stop for Lunch.” Literally the first I’d heard of that food chain. 1996 ….one of Peter’s Absolute Finest.

Peter White

I don’t think anyone has played the JazzTrax Live Performance Stage more times than Peter as we welcome him back this October to OPEN our 39th Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, Unpugged Under the Stars, with the ocean waves rolling in behind, Thursday, Oct. 8th.

Euge Groove
Euge Groove

This 1st New Euge Groove Album in 3 years is coming later this year, before he arrives again on Catalina Island in October Euge is bringing Brand New Songs on the Boat to Avalon.

What makes this Return Stage Appearance so Special is that Euge has been completely Off the Stage the past few years. He’s had some health issues he’s been working through and some changes in life, BUT his work in studio hasn’t stopped. He is one of the Go To Guys for mastering and editing. Others including some up and comers are going to him to catch his talent on Their Music. Something Jeff Lorber was famous for and now Euge.

Born Steven Eugene Grove in Hagerstown, Maryland. Did a stint in the Tower of Power Horns. He is the sax solo on the Number 1 Hit, “Seasons Change,” by the Miami girl group, Expose and again on their 1993 hit “I’ll Never Get Over You (Getting Over Me.)” He played sax on Richard Marx No. #1 hit, “Keep Coming Back.” The switched around name Euge Groove came from we think a bus boy or valet parker or something like that in Europe mispronouncing his real name. But IT WORKED. (or maybe it was his ‘mother in law….’)

He toured the world as Saxman for TINA TURNER several times. Also worked with Joe Cocker. Breaking solo as well in 2000 on Warner Bros. Records. He was named The 2000 JazzTrax Debut Artist of the Year. As his solo career blossomed through the 00’s Paul Brown helped produce some of his No. #1 hits. His Billboard Chart Toppers include “Born 2 Groove” “Religify” also named Song of the Year in 2007 “House of Groove” “Groove On” “Just Feels Right” “Slam Dunk” “Rewind” “Get Em Goin” “S7ven Large” “Old.Edu (Old School)”

Euge Groove

In 2007 We Named ‘Born 2 Groove’ The JazzTrax Album of the Year it included The JazzTrax SONG of the Year “Religify”. It Included The 2007 JazzTrax Best Smooth Jazz Vocal Sung by JEFFREY OSBORNE (1 of 2 Jeffrey songs recorded with Euge)

In 2012 Euge again got the Honor of JazzTrax Song of the Year LISTEN TO “GOD BLESS YOU” sung by Kate Miner

In 2014 Euge AGAIN got that Honor .. JazzTrax Song of the Year Watch Euge Performing “Rain Down On Me” live on stage at the Saratoga Winery with Peter White who was the guitar on the recorded song.

Pieces of a Dream

These 3 guys calling themselves PIECES OF A DREAM were emerging just as I was generating the 1st Smooth Jazz West Coast Style in San Diego. Their debut album in 1981. I began Lites Out San Diego March of 1982 and then they quickly released their 2nd album that year.

I’m trying to remember when I first REALIZED their existence. Probably noticing that Grover Washington Jr. was PRODUCING them. Then learning not only had he Produced them, but he’d uncovered them. I think maybe they had OPENED for one of his show’s where they both lived in Philadelphia.

Still teenagers as Grover was Uncovering them. Basically 3 guys, Cedric, Curtis and James. Cedric Napoleon on bass, Curtis Harmon on drums, James Lloyd on keys. Cedric left the band long ago. James and Curtis are who continue it. I think Curtis still in Philly but James having followed a woman quite awhiles back TO OHIO.

They were So Talented and I’d have to think Grover was So Proud to having Discovered them, he made them eventually HIS BAND. When Grover arrived on Catalina Island, October 1991 for his only JazzTrax Festival appearance, They, PIECES, James, Cedric, Curtis, WERE his keyboardist, bassist and drummer. BASICALLY HIS BAND.

Between Soundcheck and Show, still daylight I drove my golf cart past the public basketball court all of you walk past coming from the Catalina Express boat docks to your in town hotel and then onto the Casino. I saw Cedric Napoleon PLAYING B BALL, Basketball with the locals, there on the court next to Avalon Bay, after soundchecking with Grover Wash. Jr. and then performing with him at 9 pm.

Course the most legendary story of all JazzTraxdom is that after the show, Grover went down Crescent Blvd. with his sax and up into the long now gone Blue Parrot Bar and sat in with the local band. I came out of El Galleon down the street around midnight and heard his saxophone and said, “What the _______.” Followed the sound and there was Grover, well after his JazzTrax Festival Show, not done yet, sitting in in the local band bar.

Story didn’t end there. Word got out. Okay I put the word out on my nightly Lites Out San Diego radio show. That was the first year our festival extended to 2 consecutive weekends and with the same exact Artist Line-Up both weekends. So Grover was coming back for Weekend 2. I really didn’t think he’d repeat his late night Show-Up at the Blue Parrot Bar, but an expectant crowd had the place packed, literally with some overflow sitting on the curbs there on Main Street, expectant.

I was at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the Blue Parrot. That space now long more Hotel Metropole hotel room suites. Somebody sleeps now where Grover once played at midnight. My timing was perfect. Around the corner came Grover, with his saxophone. As he began to mount the steps up to the Blue Parrot his wife turned to me and said, “Can’t they just leave him alone?” Obviously Grover didn’t want us to. After his passing, I had a most delightful JazzTrax conversation with his wife and hopefully someday I’ll find that tape in my storage. I know it’s somewhere there.

I don’t remember if James or Curtis or Cedric came up into the Blue Parrot with Grover. Being in their mid 20’s they probably headed to The Marlin Club or JL’s Locker Room. My money’s on that at least Cedric Napoleon did. He was quite the character. And pretty good on that next to Avalon Bay Basketball Court.

KIRK WHALUM

Kirk Whalum

Kirk who came out of Memphis .. to Houston where as the Opening Band for Bob James one night, Bob said, “I think I’ll hire this saxophonist for My Band.” Then preceded to get Kirk a great record deal and produced his first 3 albums.

Kirk moved onto the Los Angeles scene. JazzTrax 1st interviewed him at his apartment in Pasadena with his then little kids running all over the place. Wound up playing with Luther, with Barbara, with Jarreau, with Quincy, then most famously for 6 years saxman for WHITNEY HOUSTON including on her most famous song, “I’ll Will Always Love You.”

Watch Kirk discuss… recording Whitney Houston’s “For All We Know” for ‘The Bodyguard’ movie which also starred Kevin Costner.

Kirk made it into some Hollywood Movie Music including a scene himself in ‘Prince of ‘Tides.’ In the 1991 Barbara Streisand, Nick Nolte movie ‘The Prince of Tides’ Kirk is the sax solo on it’s theme song AND he is the solo saxophonist playing in the corner of the bar as Streisand and Nolte slow dance in the scene Places That Belong to You (From 'The Prince of Tides')

Some Kirk Whalum Notes… Born in Memphis in 1958 and he and Ruby long since returned there permanently… Attended Texas Southern University, maybe where he met Ruby… Married to Ruby since 1980, thus the song “Ruby Ruby Ruby” … One night in HOUSTON, he was opening for Bob James. Bob watched, then hired him for sax in the Bob James Band, then got him a record deal and after debuting solo in 1985, produced by Bob James (1st 3 albums) he and Bob did 1 Collaboration Album together in 1996. ‘Joined at the Hip.’

Read Now Producer Notes by art good about his moments with Kirk Whalum through the JazzTrax Years.

Notably back in 1986 I switched the Intro Theme Song for the JazzTrax Radio Show to Kirk Whalum’s song “Afterthought.” The show’s debut year it had been Grover Washington Jr.’s “Winelight,” but that was the Opening Theme Song Nightly on KIFM Radio for my “Lites Out San Diego” Radio Show (since 1982.)

I decided I wanted to differentiate the nationally syndicated radio show from the local San Diego evening show. Can’t remember what made me pick Kirk’s “After Thought,” but consequently whenever he came to Catalina Island he always made sure it was in the show’s repertoire.

The first time I interviewed Kirk, mid to late 80’s, I was still based in San Diego. I drove up to L.A. and went to his apartment in Pasadena. His family was very young, back then. 3 little kids running all over the place. Those kids all professionals in their own rights now.

In 1991 I had a JazzTrax Interview set with Kirk, but first I went to see the new Barbara Streisand/ Nick Nolte movie ‘Prince of Tides’ in Santa Monica. Driving straight from the movie theater to Kirk’s home in Pasadena, I’m thinking I was unaware I had just heard him play in the movie I had just seen.

When I told him where I’d just come from and what I’d just seen, he said, “Art, that was me playing the saxophone in that smoky bar scene.” Literally filmed playing as Barbara and Nick slow danced in front of him.

ACOUSTIC ALCHEMY

Acoustic Alchemy

Acoustic Alchemy's Nylon and Steel Guitar Duo Miles Gilderdale and Greg Carmichael

Summer of 1987 the brand new sub label of MCA Records, the MCA Master Series spurred into existence by the just emerging contemporary jazz, soon to be called Smooth Jazz Scene, with such established artists as Larry Carlton and Booker T Jones, made a fantastic effort as well to Put Forth some brand new emerging Instrumental artists. John Jarvis, Billy Joe Walker Jr., Greenidge & Utley (from Jimmy Buffet’s band), and a double guitar leading duo and band outa London called Acoustic Alchemy

Acoustic Alchemy

Led by founding member Nick Webb, pictured on the Right here and Greg Carmichael, Nylon and String Guitarists.

Acoustic Alchemy

That very first album, titled “Red Dust & Spanish Lace” 1987

“MR. CHOW” their very first Radio Hit (well, early days of smooth jazz radio was album cuts, singles came in the 90’s as it grew into a nation-wide radio format.

WATCH AS Nick and Greg explain “MR. CHOW” and then take the song live to Stage.

They had released a couple records in the UK to limited success, actually losing money. After getting a gig as an In-Flight Band on Virgin Atlantic, literally performing as a duo on flights between London and the States, while here in Nashville they interviewed with the just emerging MCA Master Series and became, along with Larry Carlton it’s best selling signing.

Debuting in 1987 JazzTrax, also debuting it’s first ever festival on Catalina Island asked if they could come and perform, that first October. Stewart Coxhead, their manager told Art Good later, that Art was the very first promoter in America to call London and invite them over. That year was too quick, but in 1988 AA arrived and brought with them a brand new song called “Casino” to play in the Wrigley Casino.

And from that first Island Play came their next year first biggest radio hit, “Catalina Kiss” which they returned to the Island with in 1989.

We lost Nick Webb in 1998, but in came Miles Gilderdale and the Aura of these lads from London continues …. to THIS DAY ………. and to Opening Weekend in October Acoustic Alchemy, AGAIN, on Catalina Island.

Acoustic Alchemy

Art good's producer notes on Acoustic Alchemy

To this day I remember the moment. The moment I walked into the radio studio at KIFM in San Diego, Summer of 1987. I wasn’t on the air at that moment, (I was always voice tracked) did my work across town in my JazzTrax Studio, but I’d show my face occasionally. Hearing a song on the air, I literally walked into the on air and asked the DJ on the air, “Who Is This?” The on-air DJ replied, “Acoustic Alchemy.” I said, “WHO?”

TAKE A LISTEN to the very 1st Acoustic Alchemy Song I Ever Heard…..Summer of 1987 “The Stone Circle”

So as I was putting together the very first JazzTrax Festival that October, also 1987, on Catalina Island I reached out to their manager, Stewart Coxhead, in London. Could your guys come over and play our very 1st JazzTrax Festival. That was too quick. They were just getting rolling and no budget for such yet. They were just getting their first airplay and although KIFM and I had been at this genre already for 5 years, The Wave in L.A. was still a year away, and the genre had not quite exploded across America. But here was a British band who couldn’t get traction over in England, finally getting attention on this side of the Pond.

So they did arrive on our Island October, 1988, our 2nd annual, and 1989, our 3rd annual and once when Russ Freeman of The Rippingtons looking at our festival program backstage said to me, “Has Acoustic Alchemy played JazzTrax MORE times than My Ripps?” And now He’s Retired the Rippingtons while Acoustic Alchemy keeps going. Both having debuted that same year of 1987.

Once I entertained Greg and Nick in my apartment looking out over downtown San Diego, they loved playing that city. Once in December 1990 when I went to London to record interviews with the British Artists of our genre, Greg and Nick took me bar hopping. First time I’d ever seen “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Nick ran over and bought the 3 of us packs of those hot chestnuts and he started popping them like M and M’s.

I found them to be the driest most untasteful things I’d ever tried to like and stuffed most into my back pocket suddenly thirstier than ever from them. So we jumped into a pub and Nick said, “Man I wish I had some more of those Chestnuts.” And Greg said, “Art’s got a full pack in his back pocket!”

But perhaps our best time together, right after a Gavin Radio Convention in San Francisco. They had a weekend in between having to be in New York for their first Grammy Nomination. So I invited Nick, Greg, and Stewart their manager to join me at a Rental House called “The Great Escape,” about 90 minutes up the coast from San Francisco in Bodega Bay.

We found a great bar on the water with great seafood and lots of BEER and 2 ladies who had just attended and seen Acoustic Alchemy at the JazzTrax Festival. And yes they ended up back at our house, all of us watching Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘The Birds’ which had been filmed right there in Bodega Bay.

I was one of those after we sadly lost Nick Webb to cancer, WAY WAY too soon. 1998 when he was barely into his 40’s. I reached out to Greg who considering Nick had invited HIM in to replace his original partner, simply folding the band after losing Nick. I strongly suggested he keep it going, find another Nick. That their music was too good, to stop now and Nick wouldn’t have wanted that. And here we are nearly 30 years later with them returning once again, 38 years after their initial Island appearance. 38 years later WOW.

Acoustic Alchemy

I was very honored in the early 00’s to be asked by Acoustic Alchemy to write the liner notes for one of their forthcoming releases. I assumed it was for 2001’s ‘Aart.’ I mean, Art and Aart.

Acoustic Alchemy

Instead it was for their 2002’s ‘The Very Best of Acoustic Alchemy,’ pictured above, which considering my long association with them, made great sense.

Acoustic Alchemy

This was their Grammy Nominated album in 1990

Actually the Grammy Nomination was for THIS SONG Listen to  “CARAVAN OF DREAMS”

Acoustic Alchemy

It was on This 1989 album, "Blue Chip' that came their big hit off their first JazzTrax Festival appearance year before, "CATALINA KISS"

David Benoit Broke Out Same Year as our Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival 1987 He’d recorded a number of albums a few years before, 1 in 1986 first caught JazzTrax attention. Actually in hindsight, Producer Art Good remembered back sometime around 1984 going to a Tim Weisberg concert at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, up the Northern San Diego Coastline. Talking with Tim post show, Tim’s keyboardist walked up and Tim introduced them. It didn’t sink in at that point because no one knew of him yet, but that WAS David Benoit and Art Good’s 1st encounter. Yes, David was Tim Weisberg’s at one point in time keyboardist.

David Benoit

But Dave Grusin took notice, particularly off David’s song, “The Man with the Panama Hat” and signed him to the GRP Recording Company. That 1st GRP album, ‘Freedom at Midnight’ released in early 1987, same time as GRP had signed The Rippingtons, for whom David Benoit key’s were all over that 1st ‘Moonlighting’ album. Leader of The Ripps, Russ Freeman ended up doing 2 collaboration albums with David as The Benoit Freeman Project.

Mr. Benoit has played the JazzTrax Live Performance Stage on our Island innumerable times, but never Outdoors, Under the Stars, on the Beach He will come as a Trio including Roberto Vally on Bass who has himself come with so many various bands along with David. In fact, Roberto was the Bassist for Spyro Gyra when they also came to Catalina Island in 1987 for our 1st annual.

MORE ON DAVID BENOIT THROUGH THE YEARS FROM ART GOOD’s PROUCER NOTES

DON’T MISS the RETURN of keyboardist DAVID BENOIT CLOSING WEEKEND and for the 1st time Outdoors Under the Island Stars CLOSING THURSDAY on the beach.

So now backtracking to 1984, before anybody knew of Peter White unless they went to Al Stewart concerts, and well before Dave Koz even existed in the smooth jazz world. Mindi was probably a teen-ager. No Gerald yet. I went to a Tim Weisberg concert near my then North San Diego County Home at a place called The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach.

While Tim and I were chatting after the show, his keyboardist walked up and Tim introduced us. It didn’t sink in at the time, because nobody knew the guy yet, but later reflecting backwards I realized that was when I first met Dave Benoit. He was at that point Tim Weinberg’s keyboardist. They’d gone to college together.

In early 1987 when the Rippingtons broke with this week’s “Moonlighting’ JazzTrax Archives album, I drove from San Diego to North Hollywood to interview the creator of The Rippingtons, Russ Freeman. Following the directions into a kind’ve shabby trailer park. The address, A Trailer. A TRAILER and not one to shout home about.. As i walked in the front (and not very big) entry room, Russ had converted that front of “trailer” into His Rippingtons STUDIO. I was standing where he’d constructed His Rippingtons and composed all its music. Whereas the Trailer wasn’t very impressive.. the studio equipment WAS.

He’d released a Russ Freeman solo album the year before, but he’d gotten connived into a very bad contract where the guy that helped get him going, a guy in the MUSAC World (google it if you don’t remember MUSAC) had basically owned the rights to Russ Freeman’s name. So to get away from HIM, Russ went not with His Name, but “The Rippingtons.”

Follow the bouncing ball and this same gentleman, who I later became friends with, although I didn’t respect what he was doing with musicians, forged the band Kilauea. Okay his name was Dean Whitney, now long passed, I think a heart attack (karma) and he took the compositions left over of Russ Freeman, brought in keyboardist Daniel Ho, and that’s why the first Kilauea album sounded just like The Rippingtons.

Some called them The Rippoffingtons because they sounded like The Rippingtons. Of course they did. Every first Kilauea album song had been composed by Russ Freeman. But after that first Kilauea album every composition was by Daniel Ho. But he too had signed a bad contract with Dean and finally he had to escape too, just to make money for himself, instead of all going contratually to, well now you know who. That’s why Kilauea went away after the 90’s, although the JazzTrax Festival has given them 2 reunion concerts. Daniel went on to Multiple Grammy Winning Fame, like 8 of em, on his own.

So both Russ and Daniel made their escapes and did Quite Well forThemselves. You following me still???? So David Benoit, even as The Rippingtons were breaking on the GRP Recording label, so was David.

So… I went That Same Spring of 1987 to David and Kei Benoit’s house in Hermosa Beach (a bit nicer than Russ’s trailer, okay, way nicer). And I said, “Hey David, I’m starting the first All Smooth Jazz Festival (although the term smooth jazz hadn’t crept in yet) this October on Catalina Island and you’re coming because I’ve booked The Rippingtons and you’re part of The Ripps.”

And David replied, “Don’t just book them, book me.”Well… I know that David Benoit was part of the original Rippingtons because I hosted the Rippingtons first EVER concert. At the Catamaran in Pacific Beach in San Diego and David Benoit was ON THE KEYS. But by October He’d SOARED in Popularity just as The Rippingtons were doing, that year of 1987, so by October he wasn’t with Them anymore. He was HIMSELF and I DID Book Dave Benoit, HIMSELF. for our inaugural Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival, And the rest as they say… IS HISTORY

David Benoit

David Benoit and Tim Weisberg met in college in the 1970’s.So for the fun of it, LISTEN TO TIM WEISBERG ON THIS VERSION of ‘KEI’S SONG” in 2013 EXCEPT NO DAVID on this video of His Own Song

Art Good's Producer Notes on Booking Chris Standring

I think the first time I met Chris Standring, I think, was at the Hyatt Incline Village, at the JazzTrax Winter Music Festival, North Shore of Lake Tahoe. Did you ever come to one of those? I literally skied with Chris Botti at one of those. I think Chris Standring had come in Rick Braun’s band. Something like 1998 or so.

Just a couple years later I took him out for dinner at a great restaurant on Malibu Canyon Road, hope it didn’t burn down of late, woodsy, meaty place and told him we were honoring him with the 2000 Album of the Year Honor for ‘Hip Sway,’ like on only his 2nd album !!! Then he got that honor AGAIN in 2010 for ‘Blue Bolero’ and brought a little orchestra to play it’s songs orchestral affects.

Watch Chris Standring VIDEO of  “Like Paradise” lots of dancing from old days to all over the world.

His MARCH Newest he’s titled ‘Time of Change’ and boy is it for him. Got married of late. And thinking of moving out of L.A. Not back to England where he grew up on a farm somewhere outside the city, but somewhere, northward. I can’t let the cat out of the bag, yet…

Almost 30 years into his so loaded Solo Career. Don’t Miss his return this October, 26 miles across the sea. It will be an Afternoon Headlining Performance so even if you are coming on our OTHER Weekend, maybe Daytrip over to See Chris, OR Join the JazzTrax 10 Day Club, Start to Finish, never leaving the Island in between. Based in Toronto … CANADA… We think JazzTrax was one of the Original Instigators to get this Toronto Band LIVE ON STAGE. They had made their debut in 1997, but as 2 different things. They were creating dance music for Europe under a different name but as a smooth jazz band with different music, they went as Four 80 East which was the street address of their studio in Toronto (they’ve since moved, don’t try GPS ing them).

Boomtang's recording studio, The Speed of Sound, at 480 Richmond Street East in Toronto. But as Four 80 East they were merely an In Studio, Recording and Releasing Band. And with more the intention of breaking Other Bands on their then new Boomtang Record Label.

A couple albums in Art Good started reaching out and saying, “Many, you guys Need to Go Live, on Stage.” and in 2002 they did. Same year they released their Signature Song,

FOUR 80 EAST

Don’t think they want to be reminded, but that was the Night they MISSED THE BOAT. Something dilly dallied them and when they got around Avalon Harbor to the Catalina Express boats, THE BOAT WAS GONE. No more boats that night. No hotel room. HOWEVER … producer Art Good pulled off a MIRACLE and found someone at a bar who had the phone number for the manager of the Hotel Metropole.

They had 3 cancelled rooms. The band had to double up, BUT, Art whispered to Rob DeBoat and his accompanying wife, meet me at The Locker Room (dive bar) and they enjoyed a couple of unexpected hours drinking and sharing stories into the wee hours, catching the first boat off the Island next morning. But guys, the last boat this time is 11:30 pm … !!!!!

3rd Force

3rd Force

Describing themselves as a MIX of Eclectic Smooth Jazz Blend .. Dance Heavy Acid Jazz .. New Age Electronic Influences.

3rd Force

This Higher Octave Records Group Debuted in 1994 so they’ve been “delivering” for over 3 decades but most projects now spaced out every decade or so. And everything themed around "FORCE"

“3rd FORCE” 1994

‘FORCE of Nature’ 1995

‘Vital FORCE’ 1997

‘FORCE Field’ 1999

‘Collective FORCE’ 2000

‘Driving FORCE’ 2005

‘Gentle FORCE’ 2011

‘Global FORCE’ 2016

‘Life FORCE’ 2025

Could we suggest for their next one “May The FORCE Be With You”

It was this 1997 Album ‘Vital Force’ that really Thrust Them Forward Just Look at the Special Guests…

3rd Force

Although William Aura and Craig Dobbins are the Principals, one of their Chief Ingredients has been their special guests on many of their projects.

Rick Braun, Peter White and Craig Chaquico on the above 1997 breakthrough.

Elsewhere Marc Antoine, Eric Darius, Brian Hughes, Tom Scott, Grant Geissman, Greg Carmichael & Miles Gilderdale of Acoustic Alchemy, Boney James, Paul Taylor, Euge Groove, Dave Koz, Richard Elliot, Jeff Lorber, Lawson Rollins, Eric Marienthal Masters of Music and Masters of getting Great Session Players in Studio with them and on their most recent, 2025’s ‘Lifeforce, a feature of 11 Global Collaborators bringing in jazz-funk, world rhythms, and cinematic soul.

So 3rd Force through the 90’s was an In Studio Project. Not an In Concert Band, but JazzTrax Producer Art Good was insisting they needed to bring their HOT SONGS to Stage and in 2002 THEY DID. Their Live On Stage Debut was at that October’s Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival. They First Performed Live, 24 years ago in our historic 1929 Avalon Ballroom… looking out to sea.

And just when we’ve thought (several times) we might not hear from 3rd Force again, 5 years between projects 2000 to 2005. 6 years between projects 2005 to 2011. Another 5, 2011 to 2016 9 years later, 2025 came another and off that July last summer, “Lifeforce’ CD 2 Billboard #1 hits.

3rd Force

Last October, #1 with “SHOW ME THE WAY” LISTEN TO

And THIS PAST MARCH, #1 Billboard with “ONWARD AND UPWARD” WATCH 3rd Force In Live Performance from a bit more than a few years past

It’s been amazing through the MANY MANY YEARS how often the very 1st Cut JazzTrax jumps on on a new album, eventually becomes it’s 3rd Radio Single. We jumped on “TIME FOR WONDERFUL” right out of the box last July. This Summer IT will be released as that album’s 3rd Single, and maybe Number #1 Billboard before 3rd Force and Band step off a boat in Avalon in October.

One Fun Thing and to Judge Your Smooth Jazz Cognitive Test As you Listen to our 3rd Force Playlist, try guessing who the Special Guest is… before you look. They are all very distinctive Smooth Jazz Star’s Instruments.

THE FATTBURGER BAND

Fattburger

There was a jazz duo, the Bruce Cameron - Hollis Gentry Jazz Ensemble early 80’s in San Diego. In fact, they performed the National Anthem for the 1st Ever World Series Game EVER in San Diego, October, 1984. Art Good was there. Padres and Detroit Tigers. Tigers won Game 1, but the Padres won their only World Series game EVER the next night. Don’t remember the next night’s National Anthem.

A year later Bruce and Hollis split up and keyboardist Carl Evan Jr. stepped in. Together they forged forward with Mark Hunter on Bass, Steve Laury on guitar and Tommy Aros on Percussion and renamed themselves after a hamburger chain they’d eaten at in Los Angeles, adding an extra T, for not getting sued for name copyright reasons, to become The Fattburger Band.

Fatburger restaurant chain

Fun Facts about Fatburger Restaurants. (Notice, just 1 “T” on Restaurant, 2 “T’s” on Fattburger Band. First l opened in 1947 in Exposition Park in Los Angeles, first named “Mr. Fatburger.” Slimmed to just Fatburger in 1952. Their tagline, “The Last Great Hamburger Stand.” Some outlets have liquor licenses as well as “Fat Bars.” Headquarter where? Beverly Hills. With outlets in 19 other countries. Including Beijing and Dubai.

Magic Johnson is now somehow financially involved as is Queen Latifah and Kanye West or whatever he calls himself. TV’s Sanford and Son would frequently mentioned the Fatburger restaurants. Along with being an occasional movie set, Season 1 of “Tickets for a Queue” in the Apple TV series ‘Trying,’ Jason and Erica are having a meal at Fatburger.

Now back to the Music Group Fattburger

Art Good’s hugely popular Lites Out San Diego nightly radio show on 98.1 KIFM was instrumental in giving them the airplay to get boosted in that city and with Art’s new syndicated show JazzTrax debuting across America that same year, 1985, as the rebranded Fattburger, their National Attention spread.

WATCH this 1985 Video of Fattburger performing at one of Art Good’s Lites Out Nights in San Diego, 41 years ago. The original Fattburger guys. Hollis Gentry on saxophone.

Over the next 20 years just look at their list of Albums AND Record Labels Discography Albums

Fattburger song list

We don’t show them on our Historical Listing of Catalina Island Performers which we started storing in 2000, so their last appearance on Catalina Island on the JazzTrax Live Performance Stage had to have been in the 1990’s. So we’re lookin’ at probably a quarter century ago.

Hollis Gentry passed away in 2006. We lost Carl Evans Jr. in 2008. Last summer we lost drummer Kevin Koch. Guitarist Steve Laury had left the Fattburger Band in 1992, replaced by Guitarist Evan Marks. Evan composed one of their bigger 1990’s radio hits,, “Just Got Lucky.”

We reached out in 2020 to Evan to see if Fattburger could do a reunion concert, much as we’d talked Daniel Ho into forging a couple Kilauea concert reunions for us after they had dissipated after the 90’s, but at that point there was a blockade to the full band reuniting so Evan came and did a solo Thursday Unplugged Intro with a few Fattburger tunes mixed in.

Last Summer after original Fattburger drummer Kevin Koch passed away, we immediately reached back to Evan and now it’s going to happen. And possibly with some new music.

Fattburger

Here’s a Video of Fattburger at Humphrey’s Backstage in San Diego we think 16 years ago. WATCH

NOTATIONS this week FROM guitarist EVAN MARKS …… The last time FATTBURGER performed was probably in 2008, shortly before Carl Evans Jr. passed. I (Evan Marks) started with Fattburger in 1992 just before the CD ‘On A Roll’ was released. My song “Just Got Lucky” was a big song that year.

‘Livin’ Large’ was released in 2005 and a ‘Greatest Hits’ CD was released shortly after. Our new line up which will appear in October on Catalina Island includes keyboardist and percussionist Allan Phillips who subbed for Tommy Aros quite frequently while Tommy was on the road with Latin superstar Luis Miguel. Allan also subbed for Carl Evans on keyboards periodically over the years. On bass and vocals we have Ed Graves. His vocal performances can be heard on the song entitled Rittenhouse Square, pff of the first recording entitled ‘Good News’, released in 1987.

In addition, Ed sang on Oh Girl, the R&B classic hit from the Chi-Lites, from the ‘Time Will Tell’ recording released in 1989. Our new drummer and vocalist is Ricardo Tiki Pasillas. He is a Grammy-nominated multi-percussionist and vocalist. He has played with Marc Anthony, Jennifer Lopez, Arturo Sandoval and Herb Alpert. BTW, in my time since Fattburger, I have played and recorded with David Foster, Marvin Hamlisch, Bill Conti, Hubert Laws, Herbie Hancock, Jeff Lorber, Chris Botti and Michael Feinstein. In addition I have played Broadway shows Lion King, Chicago, and Spamalot among others

Fattburger

Check out just some of Fattburgers songs

MAKE THAT DREAM COME TRUE, GOOD NEWS, THE DOCTOR, TRAIL OF TEARS, GROOVE Y2K OYE COMO VA, YOU’VE GOT MAIL, EVIL WAYS, GENTLE GIANT (this might be under Evan Marks) JUST GOT LUCKY, EVA, WHO PUT THE MEAT IN MY BED, ANYTHING’S POSSIBLE, EVERYBODY WANTS TO RULE THE WORLD, YOU’RE THE FIRST, THE LAST, MY EVERYTHING, GROOVIN’ (ON A SUNDAY AFTERNOON), ONE MORE TIME, SHOW ME THE HONEY, IMAGINE THAT, THE GOOD LIFE

Some additional Producer Notes by Art Good.

I think I remember the very first night I ever saw the Fattburger Band perform Live. 1985-ish. Up at some club in North Park, kind’ve towards the San Diego State zone. They had been financially supported to record their first album by 3 friends of mine.

One was an executive with the San Diego Padres. Another was an entertainment attorney and son of Hollywood swimming legend, Esther Williams. The third was a military Air Traffic Controller who was just trying to get a foot into being involved in the entertainment world. (I think he ended up going back to his day job, landing planes.)

I still communicate with the first 2 gentlemen. The 3 had each put in 10 grand each, total of $30,000 to get a debut Fattburger album made. I doubt any got any of that money back. But they loved being involved.

So Fattburger was getting branded and jump started by All the Multiple Lights Out San Diego Nights (98.1 Smooth Jazz KIFM) that I was personally hosting night after night after night after …. through the 80’s and into the 90’s. I put Fattburger on stage indoors at Humphrey’s, in the Hilton’s Cargo Bar, at Lear’s Greenhouse Restaurant, Antonio’s Fish House on the Bay, B Street Cafe. If you were in San Diego in the 80’s, we saw each other. Maybe you won a CD from me on the stage? Oh, and Fattburger was a REGULAR at our Lites Out Weekends at La Casa Del Zorro in the desert in Borrego Springs.

Hollis Gentry on saxophone. He later served in Larry Carlton’s band briefly. Carl Evans Jr. on keys and as I remember the primary composer. Kevin Koch on drums. Mark Hunter on bass. Steve Laury on guitar before being replaced by Evan Marks. Hollis, Carl and Kevin have passed away, but a few years ago I had hoped Fattburger might revive for a reunion show, with whoever was left.

The one who had most control said no, so Evan Marks who was Very Interested and still plays with the San Diego Symphony came and did an opening Solo Show on Descanso Beach at the JazzTrax Festival, and then, the one who had said NO, passed away last Summer and now Even has recreated Fattburger and are working on music. Should have something new to present along with all the classic Fattburger tunes from the 80’s and 90’s and I think a few stragglers into the 00’s.

This is gonna be fun. Bringing back one of the bands that left the scene after those red hot early days of Smooth Jazzdom. And maybe one of those 3 initial INVESTORS will show up.

Quickest description of this young British Guitarist … He claims his music comes from Contemporary Jazz “Grabbing Me from Every Direction, Mixing Funk & Jazz, with Openings to BLUES IT UP.” Saying (metaphorically) he went to the ‘University of Slash.’

First learning to play from VCR recordings of concerts by Guns N’ Roses, who’s famous guitarist is of course … SLASH. Epiphany-ing (metaphorically) then to forming himself off the guitar influences of Chuck Loeb, George Benson, Larry Carlton, the late Ronnie Jordan (also british,) Robin Ford and the late Jeff Golub. Good choices … after “beginning” with .. SLASH.

Signed by Trippin’ N Rhythm Records, who’s owner is also British and a label that began with Britain’s Paul Hardcastle and the Jazzmasters. Solo debut came in 2021, but it was 2023’s ‘Lounge Katz’ CD where Roberto first came to JazzTrax attention. It was inside Bob James Band who he has been with since meeting in Kiev, Ukraine in 2019.

That track, “MOVING FORWARD,” made it onto U.S. Smooth Jazz Radio.

But Bob James who “always stays young, even in his late 80’s” by bringing the hot “young” talent to be His Band, brought Andrey into Bob’s Fold, into Bob’s Band, then touring the world including performances at the Blue Note in New York and the Blue Note in Tokyo and bringing Andrey In Studio to Record Bob’s 2023 JazzTrax Album of the Year, and Grammy Nominated, ‘Jazz Hands.’

Art Good’s Producer Notes when announcing Andrey Chmut ….

“Now folks, I’m tellin’ ya. Just when I think our 40 year Smooth Jazz Genre is going to AGE OUT. Although AGEING GRACEFULLY, as we all are. More New YOUNG Talent APPEARS. Let me hesitate for a second before moving on with my point.

There is a new Dave Koz Documentary. If you were on last month’s Koz South America Cruise, you may have seen it. We may have the opportunity to have it shown in the Casino Movie Theater in Avalon in October, that discussion is being had, but it’s called… “SMOOTH.”

When I generated the West Coast Version of “Contemporary Jazz” in San Diego in 1982, with my radio show, “Lites Out San Diego,” and when I began JazzTrax, called it The Showcase of the Absolute Newest in CONTEMPORARY JAZZ. The term Smooth Jazz didn’t come along until a decade later and I too Adopted It.

It got a ton of criticism, well, from traditional jazz “PURISTS.” But the term STUCK. It WORKED, and although it’s been battered back and forth, we still call it SMOOTH JAZZ. Well, Kenny G won’t, as pointed out in this documentary but even though Kenny exploded the sales of SMOOTH JAZZ he doesn’t own the genre, especially anymore.

By the end of this new Dave Koz “Smooth” Documentary, the word becomes jazz royalty. Guitarist Cory Wong, in the documentary shows how he brought Koz back into being a convert of the term SMOOTH. It’s DOPE, Cory says (that’s positive…)

I mean starting this weekend in Panama City Beach, Florida, with 8,500 sold out patrons A DAY at the Seabreeze Jazz Festival, in it’s 27th year, until our 39th year of the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival in October, THOUSANDS and I mean THOUSANDS of SMOOTHERS will be attending Smooth Jazz Festivals All Across America. Okay, back to my “POINT.”

If you look out over the audiences, whether at a Summer Smooth Jazz Concert Series like the Thornton Winery here in Southern California, or the Showroom on the Dave Koz Cruise, or even our historic October Avalon Ballroom, well, we’ve aged like fine wine.

But if you turn all your attention to the STAGE. Dave Koz may be what, 60, give or take, but his Summer Horns players are in their 30’s. We’ve just moved Vincent Ingala into Saturday Night Catalina Island Headliner Status. No longer like 14 when he first popped onto a stage with Peter White in 2010, he’s still just broken past 30.

There’s Lindsey Webster arriving at a fairly young age. They just keep coming even as we age… like fine wine. And Bob James may be 86, but his players and his young Ukrainian Saxophonist are what, around 30, or less? And this is October Artist Announcement, I personally am very excited about. He’s come a couple times to the Island in Bob’s Band, including last fall, but now ANDREY CHMUT will come with HIS band.

Not from Ukraine, but from Sacramento. That’s his new substitute city because of the Russians !!!! But easier and more affordable to get his band down to our Smooth Jazz Island from just up state. Quick Southwest Flight down to LAX and then 26 miles across the sea.

It was just 6 months ago as Bob James, following his Friday Evening JazzTrax Performance was in line, to get on board Catalina Express to depart the Island. I’d run his manager’s “left behind credit card” down to them already lining up to depart. Had a chance to quickly tell Andrey how much in SUPPORT I was, and am, 100% of his country’s fight against the Russians, which he very much appreciated.

Then he got signed by the same Artist Manager who is giving us Roberto Restuccia, Andrea Lisa and Yuko Mabuchi this Fall, which turned my attention to researching Andrey beyond Just His Band Member Career with Bob James and it is ALL of THESE FABULOUS YOUTUBE VIDEO’s that caused me to say to his manager/agent, “I WANT ANDREY TOO!” and he’s coming, not with Bob James but with HIS BAND 26 miles across the sea CLOSING WEEKEND.

I just noticed in an ad that popped up on one of these video’s that Bob James is appearing end of June at the Blue Note in Hollywood. For sure Andrey will be on sax and for sure I think I Shall Be in … that Audience.

I’m going to step out on the Limb and state, I think our 2 Where Did THEY Come From Performances Might Steal this October’s Shows. Well it’ll be hard to Step Past our David Sanborn Tribute by HIS OWN FINAL BAND GUYS, The Side Guys

Or our Chuck Mangione Tribute by his original “Feels So Good” 1970’s days guitarist Grant Geissman who is bringing along Chuck’s keyboard brother, Gap Mangione. Well and I guess the return after 3 years to the live stage of EUGE GROOVE… dare I say this October’s JazzTrax Artist Line-Up has me I think as excited as I’ve been, in years … THAT’S OUR FOREVER JAZZTRAX MIX. THE BIG … AND THE WHERE DID HE, or SHE, COME FROM !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Age 4 taken to a Kenny G concert by his folks in Roanoke, Virginia. Kenny noticing him in the crowd, called the little boy to the stage, played a melody for him, then gave the saxophone to young Adrian. A defining moment in a little boy’s just developing memory.

He was the last Horn-Man to perform and record (2012-2016) with Prince. Also featured on many of Prince final works including the 2017 Grammy Nominated ‘Hit-N-Run Phase 2.’ He has played alongside the likes of Lionel Ritchie, Bette Midler, Cello Green, Anthony Hamilton, Fantasia Barrino, KC and JoJo and Young Jeezy.

And in our Smooth Jazz Genre, with Kim Waters, Alex Bugnon, Jeff Lorber, Branford Marsalis, Fourplay, The Gap Band featuring Charlie Wilson, and, well, on this Summer of 2026 Brian Culbertson Tour, Brian’s Saxman is… Adrian Crutchfield.

Spotted by JazzTrax on the Dave Koz Cruise off Iceland, Summer 2025.
