GOING THROUGH PORT OF SAN PEDRO TO SEE BRAND NEW CAT EXPRESS TERMINAL

THE BRAND NEW CATALINA EXPRESS SAN PEDRO PORT OF CALL
It all began when I realized I did not have custody of my son for this year's Spring Break. 2 weeks all told without the basis of my life so it was time to just get out of town. Most people go to Catalina Island for Spring Break BECAUSE THEY HAVE THEIR KID, I WENT BECAUSE I DIDN'T.

First making the decision to go through Catalina Express San Pedro Port of Call. I almost always go through Long Beach Downtown Landing, but having missed my invitation to last Fall's Grand Opening of their completely brand new terminal in San Pedro last fall was dying to see what they were raving about. It is an architectural delight.

Arriving Sunday Morning at 10 am the counter agent asked first if I'd like to depart early as there was a boat departing in a few minutes ahead of my scheduled 1 pm Departure. I looked around at the stunning new terminal and restaurants and said, "Nope, I came through this port to see and experience what you created, I don't want to just jump on a boat. I want to feel this place for a few hours." And I did.

You would be well worth considering making San Pedro your departure in October for JazzTrax to See This Spectacular New Port yourself and make certain you arrive at least 90 minutes if not more before departure. My 3 hours here sped past I enjoyed it so much.

ALL THE CONSTRUCTION GOING ON IN AVALON THIS SPRING
For anyone living OFF the Island I know Catalina Island as well as anyone. Came here for the first time October 1982. Started the JazzTrax Festival here in 1987. Got married here. For a few years owned a 2nd home here. Spend every day all year marketing the Island for our festival. Talk to the Island constantly. But I did not expect what I saw upon arrival here. Construction going on, all over Avalon.

It indicates not only that it mirrors the long awaited resurgence of the U.S. and California economies, but that a major facelift renaissance is well underway on Catalina Island. Jeff and Alison Rusack Wrigley began it when they took control of The Island Company some 5 years or so ago. The outside of the Wrigley Casino in which sit the Avalon Theatre and Avalon Ballroom were given a million dollar facelift. Then a complete remodel of Descanso Beach and the Wrigley's Pavilion Hotel on Crescent Street. Their Atwater Hotel is now also completely remodeled.

Walking up and down the residential streets in town I saw a whole lot of house construction goin' on. The house next to the first rental house I stayed in was completely torn down and a brand new house on the corner was just beginning to be laid out. Other houses were going through facelifts and complete interior designs. Money is again being spent in Avalon on homes and contractors are busy busy there again.

Then there was all of this - which you, the JazzTrax Festival Goer will enjoy come October.

THE BRAND NEW BLUE WATER GRILLE

You thought the Brand New Avalon Grille which opened in 2010 brought Big City Elegance to the Island, wait till this next establishment, based in Newport Beach opens This Summer. The Structure is Up on the old site now combined of Armstrong's Fresh Fish and the Busy Bee. Hanging out over the water looking straight at the Wrigley Casino and Avalon Ballroom.

THE BRAND NEW COURTYARD COFFEE AND MICROBREWERY

El Encanto has been Courtyard Coffee's location, below The Landing, originally called Solomon's Landing which is now permanently closed as El Encanto, across the street from Villa Portofino and across from the boardwalk heading for the Casino, will start a complete remodel this summer to become a full time Day Spa.

New name for Courtyard Coffee will be The Catalina Island Brewhouse and it is well under construction next to the Avalon Grille on Front Street. Owner Eric Huart told me he will serve Ales from some of California's "smallest breweries" like Monkish Brewery. Plus he'll Brew himself here on the Island too with 1 double barrel batch each week and a little ferment room customers can view through the glass. Turning his establishment right in the heart of town now into an Old School European Cafe with Brewery open during JazzTrax from 6 am to possibly Midnight and including Open Air Seating in the front. Also serving Wine and his always Incredible COFFEE with their Pastries Oven Baked right there.

THE BRAND NEW SHOPS AT THE ATWATER

This is the walkway underneath the Atwater Hotel from Von's to the Atwater. Only the Post Office and Hardware Store are accessible right now. Construction has everything else blocked off. New Storefronts for Catalina Island Vacation Rentals. New Coffee Shop. New Ice Cream Store. I believed with openings to the sky and casual seating areas - sort've maybe like an indoor park. And the Atwater Hotel now completely remodeled. No more Ratwater.

THE BRAND NEW SUITES AT THE
GLENMORE PLAZA HOTEL

Owner Jim Amoroso, a rare Chicagoan who is BOTH a White Sox AND Cubs fan gave me a tour through what will be Brand New Suites. I believe ALL the rooms on ALL the Floors fronting the street have been or will have become Brand New Suites by Summer.

Elegant, private Jacuzzi's, and within minutes by foot of everything in town. This is California's 2nd Oldest Hotel, built by the same architect who built the Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego in the late 1800s. This is a JazzTrax Host Hotel.

THE BRAND NEW SUITES (handicap accessible) AT CATALINA ISLAND INN

Owner Martin Curtain gave me a full run through here. Where the walkway to Radio Shack and other small stores used to be beneath his hotel is All Torn Out. By Summer it will be about 6 Brand New completely handicap Accessible SUITES. 2 will Front the Street seeing out, but not able to look in. Others will have Private Patio's down a walkway that shares wall's with Von's to an open sky when that roof is torn out. The workers were banging and drilling away as I took my Hard Hat off. This is a JazzTrax Host Hotel.

FURTHER SCOOP

I golfed with Mayor Bob Kennedy. I did the Hamilton Cove Morning Walk with former Mayor Current City Councilman Ralph Morrow. I sat in all the Avalon Bars. Even went to Lion's Club in the Catalina Country Club Bar courtesy of Denny Honsey from Catalina Island Vacation Rentals. Only takes me a couple nights in Avalon to pull it all in.

The Catalina Country Club Bar and Grille which were closed during JazzTrax last Fall hope to re-open the Bar this Summer which hopefully will include October and JazzTrax. It truly is one of the best and most historic bars in the World. Clubhouse of the Chicago Cubs when they held Spring Training on the Island in the 30's and 40's.

They were holding a big Easter Weekend Art Festival as I was departing the Island. Pop-Ups and displays all along Main Street. Be sure and eat this Fall during JazzTrax at Sally's Waffle Shop and Joe's, next door. Word is their leases will not be extended, that Sally plans to retire (is there really a Sally?) and to expect yet another Brand New Restaurant on that corner in a couple years.

Not this Summer but Summer 2014 Steve Bray, one of JazzTrax Biggest Supporters, hopes to open a Brand New Mexican Restaurant down below his current Steve's Steakhouse.

The Vines continue to grow and mature at the new Rusack Wine Vineyards at Rancho Escondido, The Wrigley Ranch. With plans to develop a Full Winery there with Wine Tastings, the road to the Far Side of the Island that ran through the ranch, that you remember from all the JazzTrax Unplugged Concerts there, I believe has been rerouted to route Around the Ranch now.
