1st Time JazzTrax Guest Visits JazzTrax Studio This Week

Toronto Latin Guitarist Johannes Linstead was under our radar for Way Far Too Long.   Debutting in 1999 suddenly with the release of his current ‘Mistico’ he got his 1st invitation to Catalina Island this October.  It includes one of our new favorite can’t get enough of songs… “Coconut Girl”.   Not to make comparisons, but if you LOVE JESSY COOK…..the style is similar.   His voice even sounds like Jessy’s…..hey, can they be in the same room at the same time?  Or maybe it’s a Canadian thing.   You’re gonna like Johannes and his stories how his mom and dad came over from Europe…..on different ships…..so…..

Saxophonist Jaared' to debut 'Manhattan Nights'
The Saxophonist who simply goes by his first name... Jaared, is in studio with me this week. Listen right now as Jaared debuts his new April CD 'Manhattan Nights'. On microphone, Jaared's stories will include the project's title coming from his having, by happenstance, being in New York City the Morning of 911. How he saw the plane hit the 2nd Tower of the World Trade Center with his own eyes. How he then quickly fled by ferry from Manhattan back to the Jersey shoreline on the other side of the Hudson River only to turn around and watch the Towers crumble. Jaared will tell of his project being dedicated to Dianne Grainger, his band's drummer, who suffered a head injury and passed away suddenly last summer. She is the daughter of the drummer of Acoustic Alchemy. Dramatic stories and the songs you'll find uplifting.

JazzTrax this Week features multiple cuts from April's Brand New Steve Oliver,'Global Kiss'. The highly talked about New Chris Standring 'Blue Bolero' who's radio single "Bossa Blue" is already charting Top 10. 1995 Jesse Cook 'Tempest'
This Week's Archives Album Spotlight takes our ears and nostalgic memories back to Fall of 1995. When Narada Records asked me if there was any way of debuting one of their New Artists on Catalina Island. With the JazzTrax line-up completely in stone, I replied,"Well, there is this very intimate performance area on the Mezzanine of the Avalon Casino. He could play there in the Marine Room Bar (where the JazzTrax Festival TV always has the Baseball Play-Offs on in October)." Thus history was made when two weeks after the release of 'Tempest' Jesse Cook took America by storm playing between Main Stage sets, downstairs. It's where it all began for the French Canadian Rumba guitarist as we celebrate that now 15 year old solo debut CD on JazzTrax this week.

We'll debut 'Global Kiss' which is being released next week. Songs written while Steve looked up at nearly 12,000 foot tall Mt.San Gorgonia behind him and nearly 12,000 foot tall Mt. And with Steve in the JazzTrax Studio, great stories to match, including his weeklong cruise on board the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Piano music for inside and out with David Lanz
Winter is a great time for a "piano" album. Storms outside. Maybe some storms goin' on "inside." Still planning for the still fresh new year while trying to forget a whole lot from the past year. When along comes David Lanz. No longer Seattle pianist, because he and wife moved further North, just below the Canadian border, to Bellingham, near to the fast approaching Winter Olympics in Vancouver. The pianist who gave us "Cristofori's Dream" two decades ago, plus "Behind the Waterfall", long heard beneath all JazzTrax Festival radio commericials, will be this weekend's JazzTrax Guest to Debut his new 'Liverpool'. A piano re-imaging of the music of the Beatles. However, subtle enough, the Beatles aspect doesn't necessarily jump out at you. The son of Sir Lawrence Olivier guests as a quick voice. The keyboardist from acres of historic pop hit songs,Larry Knechtel, including Simon & Garfunkle's "Bridge Over Troubled Waters" gives one of his final session performances before unexpectedly passing away last year. David Lanz will also share stories of living in Vancouver in the early 70's and being the keyboardist on Terry Jacks long ago memory hit "Seasons in the Sun."

2006 Bob James 'Urban Flamingo'
Like I said, a great time of year for a piano album. So we go piano with our Archives Album Spotlight too. Bob James had a release in 2006 that was vastly underrated except by JazzTrax. It was our No. 2 Album of the Year and included our No. 2 Song of the Year. We called it the puppy adoption song, "Choose Me"! Plus a guest appearance by Earl Klugh and fellow Fourplay'er Nathan East forsome great scat. 'Urban Flamingo' is this weekend's JazzTrax Archives Album and it's gotta make you want to really turn it up. Bob James is one of the truly best melody composers of our time.

War Stories and Smooth Jazz from Guitarist Drew Davidsen
Happy New Year and welcome to Twenty-Ten. Our first JazzTrax Guest of the New Year was one of our 2009 Debut Artist finds. Towson, Maryland Guitarist Drew Davidsen. We only just learned of him in June. Had him in the JazzTrax Studio in July to debut "Around Again" and on the Island in Live Performance in October. But this weekend we're going back to his Desert Storm Days in the U.S. Navy. He tells stories this weekend of being turned on to George Benson by a helicopter pilot off Kuwait and to Acoustic Alchemy by a Colonel. And how his military service in that early 90's war turned him towards a career with his Guitar. Fascinating stories this weekend mixing war and Smooth Jazz, but then, that's what our show is all about. Fascinating stories from the stars of Smooth Jazz. Wait till you hear Peter White's later in January...
